While the bottled water habit is here to stay, thankfully the disposable plastic water bottle is being replaced by the reusable one. Reusable water bottles are easier on the environment and now offer options unheard of a few years ago, including infusing and filtering your water. We've never had so many choices! But what do all of these options mean to you and reusable water bottle safety?
GENERAL TIPS: when choosing a reusable water bottle, think about where you'll be using it and what's right for you. A lightweight bottle may be safer for travel, while a glass bottle may be preferred by those concerned with the taste of their water. Always wash your water bottle thoroughly before using it for the first time. Regularly inspect your water bottle. If any part of the bottle appears to be damaged, do not use it.
BOTTLE MATERIAL: reusable water bottles and their components are manufactured with a variety of materials, including aluminum, stainless steel, glass and plastic. Whichever bottle you choose, make sure that any plastic is BPA free. Many people prefer glass water bottles, however if you plan on freezing your drinking water in the bottle, glass is not a good idea as it will probably shatter when the ice expands.

FILTERS: there are many water bottles that offer options for filtering water. When using a filter, it is important to replace it according to the schedule recommended by the manufacturer. What's the risk of not replacing a filter? Not only does this diminish its effects, the contaminants in your water could actually be made worse, according to the EPA. Keep replacement filters handy to minimize the temptation to use filters too long.
Using these easy to follow safety tips for choosing and using your reusable water bottle will ensure you get the most benefit out of your investment. Any thoughts you'd like to share? We'd love to hear from you!
