DRINK SMART: WHY YOU SHOULD DRINK MORE WATER

Feel guilty that you don't drink enough water?  Don't feel alone.  Most of us feel that way.  Need some motivation?  Did you know that drinking water is also an easy and responsible way to improve your health by helping you stay hydrated, energized and make better food choices?

THE FACTS:

  • By drinking more water, you are less likely to consume sugary soft drinks - one 12oz can of cola has about 140 calories!  By replacing just one soft drink each day with the same amount of water can you save enough calories to reduce 12 pounds each year.
  • Drinking water before meals helps you feel full faster, so you eat less - you've heard it before, that portion control is an important part of maintaining a healthy weight.   Drinking a glass or two of water before a meal is a calorie free way to curb your appetite.
  • Drinking water also helps you regulate your body temperature, lubricates and cushions joints and can help protect the spinal cord and other tissues, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. in their webpage Drinking Water.
  • Your body needs water to relieve itself of waste - drinking several glasses of water daily can help prevent and relieve constipation.

Make it taste good!  One of the top reasons for not drinking water is taste, particularly with tap water.   Combat this and get added flavor and health benefits with an infusion water bottle, which allows you to flavor and beneficial vitamins your drinking water with any combination of fresh fruit, vegetables or herbs.  Our favorite fruits to infuse are lemon and lime, but why not mix it up to keep it interesting?   Another option?  Natural filtered water bottles can improve the taste of tap water while adding beneficial minerals such as calcium and iron to your drink.

Have it at your fingertips! Reusable water bottles come in all shapes, sizes and materials, and now make it convenient to have your water with you at work, home and play.  Having your bottle with you makes it less likely you will buy expensive bottled water or soft drinks.  Reusable water bottles are also better for the environment, generating less precycle and solid waste than bottled water or beverage cans and bottles.

Sip it throughout the day! Most of us should be drinking about 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.  Many people find it difficult to drink more than one or two glasses at a time.  Try sipping water throughout the day to stay hydrated and maximize health benefits.
