KITCHEN TOWEL TIPS: EASY ECO CHIC

When it comes to choices for kitchen towels and dish cloths, you've got plenty to pick from.  Quality towels are a good investment and can save money and natural resources by reducing the need for paper towels.  From material to design, it can be tough to narrow your choices down to a few towels though.  We suggest five criteria to help narrow the list - what are they and how will they benefit you?

Earth friendliness: 100% organic cotton and bamboo are two stars in earth friendly kitchen towels and for good reason.  100% organic cotton is grown without pesticides and needs far less water than regular cotton.  Bamboo is a fast growing renewable plant which does not require pesticides or fertilizers, nor does it require irrigation.  Both can be recycled and are biodegradable.

Responsibility: look for manufacturers who address environmental concerns such as waste reduction and societal concerns such as working conditions and fair wages for staff.

Absorbency and use:  absorbency is critical for a kitchen towel.  Kitchen towels can be used for drying dishes, as a drying mat, for drying hands and even for drying clean produce.  Bamboo and organic cotton are both very soft and absorbent.  Bamboo has the added qualities of being naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic.  For kitchen towels, these are features we love.

Durable and easy to care for:  no matter how beautiful, a kitchen towel or cloth needs to withstand repeated wash and use.  Bamboo and organic cotton are both very durable fabrics.  You should not use a fabric softener with bamboo or organic cotton towels, as it can impact absorbency.  We think avoiding softeners also can minimize the chance of residues transferring from the towels to hands or food.

Design:  kitchen towels are an easy and inexpensive design element and can be changed to suit the season or your decorating whim.  In fact, one of the easiest ways to add your design signature or add 'pop' to a kitchen is to use decorative towels strategically placed to enhance design.  Having towels at your family's fingertips is also an easy way to discourage paper towel use.  Towels designed for display can be arranged on the counter, or hung from a drawer, an oven or refrigerator handle.  There are now even magnetic towels made with bamboo and organic cotton that will stick to any magnetic surface.
